Osiris bronze figurine. This votive figurine of Osiris is 124mm high. He is wearing a double plumed Atef-crown with frontal uraeus, has a false beard, and holds crook and flail. The hands are level with each other which is the traditional pose for such bronzes made in middle Egypt*. He is on an integral base with a side loop attachment as well as the loop at the back. Beneath the base is an additional shoert peg. It reputedly comes from a very old collection and indeed the very dark almost black patina is consistent with this as in the
18th and 19th centuries, collectors valued dark, glossy finishes, and restorers often used oils, waxes, or sulphur containing chemicals to achieve this look.
Late Period circa 500 BC Ex my own collection. Acquired from Vincent McCarthy in 1989. Said to be from a very old UK collection pre WWI On a 'home-made' stand.
*The position of the arms of Osiris statues varied and are linked to regional traditions. In Upper (southern) Egypt, figures of Osiris usually show the arms crossed over each other. In Middle Egypt representations ( as with the one I have) show the god holding them at the same level and in Lower Egypt his one arm is on his chest and the other on his stomach.
