Catalogue of the Aramaic and Mandaic Incantation Bowls in the British Museum Hardcover – 1 Dec. 2000 by J.B. Segal (and Erica C. D. Hunter) Very fine but blank front page torn out. Orange highlighter pen markings on some pages The British Museum's collection of incantation bowls found in Mesopotamia is probably second only to that of the Iraq Museum in Baghdad. The function of the bowls, which have magical texts mainly in Jewish Aramaic and Mandaic scripts, was to protect the client from evil spirits. This catalogue provides photographs of 142 bowls or fragments of bowls, and a transliteration, translation and commentary on the text of each of the 120 that are in meaningful scripts. It also includes a typological study of the physical and decorative features of the bowls, some of which have anthropomorphic or zoomorphic drawings, and a glossary and table of scripts.
