There are hardly any items for sale beyond page 29 on the gallery here.
I have left so many sold items on show (and in the sold archive) as many collectors have said they find such photos and information useful to have.

Silver denarius of Domitian with find-spot provenance and details dating to 1928!
From my own collection Domitian. 81-96. Minerva with spear. A nice example. R.I.C 174
In September 1928, a young nine year old boy, Gerald Grimsdell, digging in his back garden in Muswell Hill, London, (104 Cranley Gardens, London N10 3AH) reaching a depth of about 4 feet, he uncovered 654 silver coins, a silver spoon, and a bronze ring (which no longer survives). There were also fragments of pottery. Experts reconstructed these broken fragments. and found that the pieces turned out to be a unique, purpose-built money box, complete with a slit for coins. It was possibly made by the owner of the hoard.
There were a few Republican coins but mainly Imperial denarii the latest dated to A.D. 209.
Looking at the Roman coin types (41 of which now remain in the British Museum), these suggest that the hoard was buried in or shortly after AD 209.
I purchased one of these silver coins (From C J Martin) in 1983 because at that time I was living only a few hundred yards from where they were found. Buyers also gets the cut-out from the newspaper and CJ Martin's catalogue. I don't have the photo of the young lad in questions: I found those online. |
Price: 395 GBP
