These phallic mulets, often with the fist with thumb through finger icon, the so called mano fica, were widely worn, especially by soldiers , in the belief that they conferred some protection against the evil eye.

 

 

There have been and continue to be a large number of fakes on eBay, especailly in silver. silver amulets are actually pretty rare and when found are usually quite small.

 

Here is a genuine silver Roman phallic amulet.
