January 2008

A "new" and really pretty dreadful  fake erotic oil lamp is doing the rounds.

The seller on eBay says:

AUTHENTICITY : Ashoura Traders fully guarantees all artifacts to be genuine as to culture, material and age. All objects are accompanied by a lifetime Certificate of Authenticity which fully describes the artifact including culture, date, size, and descriptive details as well as a color photograph of the artifact. When known, provenance and/or country of origin is noted. We are also including , at no additional cost, a complete authentication and dating analysis through sophisticated testing and examination of tool signature, mineral salt deposits, encrustation deposits, and chemical composition. This method of testing is conclusive evidence regarding actual age of any object. These tests are done through a private independent laboratory.

And looking at his sales, people are really willing to believe all this!

The  authenticator here is the same as discussed on this page in regard to fake ushabtis.

Beware of vgbras. Like my-collection1 he started selling copies as copies. Now he sells them as authentic. Also coins.

I believe that these are made by the same fellow who made the fakes on the previous page. There are a lot of them around.

Here is something quite interesting: a forgery terracota oil lamp in the British Museum.

The BM catalogue is incorrect however: this is taken from Slab 43 of the South Frieze.
