Although this type of fake ushabti is shown elsewhere on this website, in the "Is this genuine? section, as it is one of the commonest types that new collectors get stung by, and ask me about, maybe because it is usually inexpensive and also, because it is so common, I think it deserves a page in this section of the website as well. even though it would not fool an even half serious collector for a moment.
Here are three examples.
Sometimes these are offered with very inventive information. They are often drilled and put on necklaces.
This type comes in many different colours and surfaces. There is a slight variation in the overall shape but the size and inscription type is consistent across the group.
There are a lot of them around!
They are very inexpensive when offered as "replicas".
Though rather more money when sold as genuinely ancient. Up to a 1000% mark up. But at least you do get a Certificate of Authenticity.
Alternatively one can buy them framed.
Even if you buy one of these tourist souvenirs in Egypt you can run into problems! Though good sense prevailed at last.
