One of the most commonly seen fakes for sale, especially on eBay are faked faience ushabtis and amulets.

These are often poorly made, somewhat inventive and frequently do not  follow recognised ancient Egyptian iconographic cannons

The often have unusual additions and motifs which are not seen on genuine shabtis

The "hieroglyphs" are frequently not hieroglyphs at all but simply odd shapes which the forger thinks will be seen as hieroglyphs. When real hieroglyphic signs are used they are often badly formed and incorrectly placed and make no sense.

This is nothing new!

Forged Egyptian Antiquities

by

T. G.Wakeling, published in  London

 by Adam & Charles Black

 in 1912

A comprehensive study of forged ancient Egyptian artifacts, with many interesting tales about the fakers and the marketplace.

There are chapters devoted to gold, glass, wood figures, stone figures, scarabs, alabaster, serpentine & granite, mummies & mummy cases,

a forged tomb, and the makers and sellers of forged antiquities.

It's only very modestly helpful to the modern collector
