YOU ARE HERE:>>REAL or FAKE>Fake classical pottery, section 2, page 7
Not that I had any doubt at all, but I had both TL tested:
Want to know more about fakes of Etruscan and Etrusco-Corinthian pottery? I can recommend a lavishly illustrated book. Though difficult to get hold of. Contact me if interested.
There is something about the rendering of the design of the herons on this plate that should draw one's attention and indeed raise a question about its authenticity. If you cannot see what I mean feel free to ask me. The seller here is respectable and honest and withdrew this piece from sale as soon as alerted about this.
This fake was, with another from the same workshop actually shown in volume I of Dr Villari's books. Someone had gone to the trouble of cleaning the plate, removing some of the fake grime. But as you can see it is undoubtedly the same plate. These particular fakes were made in Italy between 1998 and 1999 There have been a fair number of the fake pieces shown in Dr Villari's books which have appeared on the market sold as genuine. They were originally sold on eBay, many years ago, as reproductions. However at least two "dealers" acquired several and sold them on as genuine. These pieces were slightly altered before being put on the market again, either cleaned up as with this plate, or "distressed" by removing some of the painted decoration.
Another piece to consider.............. Someone asked me about this on eBay before considering making a bid. We will return to this piece later, but let us first take a close look at another below here which I think you will agree is from the same workshop as the one offeren on eBay.
To comapare with a known genuine piece. Let us look at the way the stag is done. And the other side with the swan. Are any of these fakes? A simple first test. Wet with water. Ancient pottery usually adsorbs the water exceedingly rapidly and in a very short time the surface will not betray any moisture And wet ancient pottery ofen smells oddly 'musty'. This piece smells like fresh clay. A bit worrying.
The surface accretions look very odd No crystaline structure even at high resolution. Next page about fake Etruscan pottery>>>> |
